The human being is considered as a social individual, expressing this in other words, a person cannot be isolated from other people, as there is a need of keeping ourselves in constant communication. Since the moment we born till the moment we die, we certainly belong to a group. Even when a baby was born, he or she immediately will become part of a group. This first group will be the family, where the kid will follow certain role and most important he will learn how to communicate with the ones who surround him.At home is where the kid will experiment for the first time the usage of language, from receiving to sending messages. We could apply this to every social group, its members have their own view of the world according to their preferences and also the situations they are going through. But what happens when someone decides to get out from the “comfort zone” and tries to look for a different environment, saying this in other words, is trying to become part of a new group or only socialize with someone new. Well, that someone will face, first of all, an expected and totally normal prejudge from the other person thanks to a stereotype that has been formulating thanks to their environment and culture. It is normal people has prejudges about others considering we tend to think in categories. First impressions consist, mostly about the appearance of the person but also the way he or she speaks. After this, the one who is receiving the message will create a prejudge or idea about the other who is sending the message, that may be right or not. Stereotypes have an important role too. Retaking the main purpose about this research, people who want to socialize or interact with others independently if they belong to the same group or not will face the already mentioned concepts, prejudge and stereotype, these are some impairments that will keep the socialization process stuck in a pothole. Returning now to the stereotype situation, it is important to emphasize stereotypes affect social perceptions and behavior. Once people are stereotyped they will have to deal with the possibility of confirming or revealing a negative stereotype because of their actions. (7) Just for mentioning an example, let’s imagine someone which social status is considered as a low one speaks to a person which status is in the scale of high. Clearly, when both hear themselves they will recognize immediately, the usage they give to language. The one who belongs to the upper class will be introduced to a vocabulary he might not be familiar with, the colloquial expressions and of course the intonation, besides he could have a better idea of the situation from the one who belongs to a lower class, either to a family, work or school atmosphere and so the same situation with the one we mentioned at last. Usually, it exists a rejection from both persons, in consideration of a mechanized idea that can be false about how they use language. The one, who belongs to the upper class, may think the usage the one, who comes from the lower class, is giving to language is poor and not correct. When there are systematic differences in the way different groups speak a language, we say that each group speaks a dialect of that language. But before a dialect turns into it, it goes through certain stages such like Creole and pidgin; we are going to focus on both terms but more on pidgin. A pidgin will remain active until is required, it comes into being where people need to communicate but do not have a language in common. |
